Where your phone stops working in France
France's ARCEP regulator publishes official coverage maps. The gaps are significant:
- French Alps — deep valleys in Savoie and Haute-Savoie lose signal completely. Chamonix area has good coverage; Val d'Isère backcountry does not
- French Pyrenees — Ariège department has some of the worst coverage in mainland France. Mountain passes above 1,500m are consistently dead
- Massif Central — the vast volcanic plateau in central France. Cantal, Lozère, and Aveyron departments have the lowest coverage rates nationally
- Corsica interior — the GR20 hiking trail (Europe's toughest) has multi-day stretches with zero signal. Mountain villages in the interior are disconnected
- Gorges du Verdon — Europe's deepest canyon. Spectacular but no signal at the bottom or along many trails
- Cévennes National Park — designated International Dark Sky Reserve, also means no light infrastructure = no cell towers
- Ardèche Gorges — popular kayaking area with long stretches of no coverage along the river
- Landes forest — the largest artificial forest in Western Europe. Many camping areas within have weak or no signal
The roaming trap in France
France is an EU country, but roaming still isn't free for everyone:
