Rent a Starlink Mini in Portugal
The Alentejo, interior Algarve, Serra da Estrela, Peneda-Gerês — Portugal's most beautiful landscapes have the weakest signal.
Portugal attracts over 30 million tourists annually and has become Europe's hottest digital nomad hub outside Spain. But outside Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve coast, connectivity drops fast. The interior is famously underpopulated — and underserved by mobile networks.
30+ million international tourists per year.

Where your phone stops working in Portugal
Portugal's three major carriers (MEO, NOS, Vodafone PT) cover coastal cities well, but the interior tells a different story:
- Peneda-Gerês National Park — Portugal's only national park has large areas with no signal, especially deep valleys and mountain trails
- Serra da Estrela — Portugal's highest mountain range. Signal drops out on hiking trails and ski roads above 1,500m
- Interior Alentejo — vast empty plains between Évora and the Spanish border. Villages with a few hundred people often have one weak cell tower
- Trás-os-Montes (Bragança district) — one of Europe's least populated regions. Dead zones on roads between villages are common
- Douro Valley interior — beyond the tourist vineyards, the deep river valley blocks signal. Roads along the Douro have frequent dropouts
- Southwest Alentejo coast (Rota Vicentina) — the hiking trail along sea cliffs has long stretches with no coverage
- Schist Villages (Aldeias do Xisto) — remote mountain villages in central Portugal, beautiful but disconnected
- Madeira interior — mountain roads and levada hiking trails in the laurel forest have patchy to zero signal
The roaming trap in Portugal
Portugal has the same EU roaming rules as Spain, but with a few extra catches:
Same ~20 GB cap on a €20/month plan. Portuguese carriers enforce the 4-month "roam like at home" monitoring — stay too long and you get surcharges.
£2.47/day. Portugal is the #1 holiday destination for Brits — and EE's roaming fees hit hardest on longer stays. Throttling reported.
£2/day. Algarve is a top British holiday destination — a 2-week trip costs £28 just in roaming fees before any data.
Free data at 128 kbps (2G speed). High-speed pass: $5/day or $35/week. Adds up fast on a 2-week Algarve trip.
You can buy a Portuguese SIM, but it won't help in Peneda-Gerês, Serra da Estrela, or the Alentejo interior — there's simply no tower to connect to.
Portugal's interior is one of the emptiest regions in Western Europe. Even local carriers can't cover it. Satellite internet is the only option that works everywhere.
The SkyRelay solution: SkyRelay gives you unlimited satellite data at 100-200 Mbps across all of Portugal — from Peneda-Gerês in the north to the Algarve's hidden beaches. No roaming, no dead zones.
I'm a travel photographer based in Valencia. I need to upload 20GB shoots from locations with zero signal. SkyRelay changed my workflow completely — I uploaded a full wedding shoot from a cliff near Jávea.

Pickup cities in Portugal
Lisbon
Portugal's capital is your launching point. The Alentejo, Sintra, and the southwest coast are waiting — with no signal.
Porto
Gateway to northern Portugal — the Douro Valley, Peneda-Gerês National Park, and the wild Trás-os-Montes region.
Faro
Algarve gateway. The resort strip has signal — the wild west coast, interior hills, and secret beaches don't.
Funchal
Madeira's levada walks and mountain roads are world-famous. The signal along them? World-famously bad.
Lagos
Surf town vibes, dramatic cliffs, and the wildest stretch of coast in Portugal — with almost no signal once you leave town.
Coimbra
Central Portugal's university city — gateway to the Schist Villages, Buçaco Forest, and Serra da Estrela.
Évora
Heart of the Alentejo — Roman temples, cork forests, and one of Europe's emptiest regions stretching to the Spanish border.
Braga
The closest major city to Peneda-Gerês — Portugal's only national park, and one of its most disconnected areas.
Sintra
Fairy-tale palaces, misty forests, and a wild Atlantic coastline — where Lord Byron fell in love and cell towers fear to tread.
Aveiro
Portugal's Venice — canals, colorful boats, and a gateway to the wild Beira coast and the Dão wine region.
